Six Senses Con Dao Review

Just a 40-minute flight from the bustle of Ho Chi Minh City and on the southern-most tip of Vietnam lies an archipelago of 16 untouched islands, set amongst a proudly protected marine reserve where green turtles, dugongs and baby sharks roam free amongst the vibrant corals.

The largest of these spectacular islands plays host to one of Six Senses’ most revered properties – Six Senses Con Dao. Nestled beautifully into the hillside and with a focus on sustainability, Six Senses Con Dao is widely recognized as one of the world’s top eco resorts. Arriving here for the first time you could be forgiven for thinking you had stepped onto the set of Jurassic Park, where jungle-clad hills slope gently down to meet the turquoise waters below.

THE RESORT

The resort is made up of fifty perfectly positioned beach villas, which blend seamlessly into the landscape, offering either ocean views (giving optimum privacy) or beach front villas for those that like to wake up with their toes almost in the sand. Our sprawling Beach Front Villa featured a private terrace with an infinity pool overlooking the sweeping bay, a tropical outdoor shower, a deep soak bath tub and a four poster bed so beautiful that I would happily stay nestled in the sheets for the remainder of my stay.

DINING

Arriving at the resort, we were met by our charming host, who briefly and eloquently explained the layout of the resort and all that it has to offer us during our stay. He ran through the four different dining options comprising By the Beach for international cuisine with views across the sweeping sands, By The Market for traditional Pho and Banh Xeo Tom (Vietnamese pancake), Elephant Bar for laid back dining and cocktails, and lastly the wonderful Splash Bar, located on the beach by the pool. There was a dazzling array of activities available during our time on Con Dao and much to my joy; we were gently handed the Spa menu. The Spa features five treatment rooms, all of which are surrounded by blooming tropical gardens, with an outdoor yoga and meditation pavilion, a nail bar and a fitness center – the perfect sanctuary after a long day playing in the surf.

Having unpacked and enjoyed the morning on our sundrenched private terrace, we dodged the scuttling crabs and ventured down to By The Beach restaurant, where a long lazy lunch ensued. We feasted on fresh gazpacho, freshly caught chargrilled squid on a bed of roasted vegetables rocket and couscous salad, with whole lemongrass fish barbequed in banana leaf. We sat overlooking the bay and soaked up the beauty of the surrounding landscape before heading up to the resorts ice cream parlour, where hand churned ice cream is available throughout the day.

As the sun began to retreat behind the hillside, we ventured to the Market Place bar. To a soundtrack of Motown tunes we sat under the lanterns on driftwood day beds enjoying a range of different cocktails which included the Six Senses White Sangria - a cocktail so delicious we plan to recreate it when home.

ACTIVITIES

For those that wish keep busy during their stay, a wide variety of activities are available. From clam collecting, trekking, snorkeling excursions and boat charters to island escapes, ‘feed the fish’ golf, local history tours and if you are lucky enough – watching newborn turtles make their way down to the sea.

Before dawn on our third day, a call came through from our Host. He informed us in a hushed voice that seventeen baby sea turtles had been born during the night and would be released shortly on the shoreline. With the sun slowly creeping up from behind the neighboring islands, we watched in silence as the tiny hatchlings made their way into the surf for the very first time – an experience so magical it will stay with me forever.
