5-Star Hotel Guide

Bhutan

Embark on the journey of a lifetime to discover a true slice of Shangri-La

Bhutan

5-star hotel guide to Bhutan

Where is Bhutan you may ask? Hidden away within the Eastern Himalayas between India and China, with its unique attractions now gaining worldwide attention following the royal visit by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in the spring of 2016.

Bhutan is the size of Switzerland but very sparsely inhabited, with spectacular soaring mountains, dense forests, tropical valleys, imposing architecture, an exhilarating religion, fascinating art, and above all else – inhabited by, perhaps, the nicest people the world over.

If this isn’t enough, then consider this: there is virtually no violent crime; beggars are unheard of; and even the dogs are free and loved by all, so not one snarls or barks or bites. Add this all together and perhaps you will begin to understand why so many travellers have referred to Bhutan as their true slice of Shangri-La. Yes, heaven on earth.

The happiest people on earth

The Bhutanese are fiercely independent, have never been colonised and are extremely proud of their traditions. They are a deep thinking, soul-loving people who have to work very hard to maintain their peaceful lifestyle and enjoy their cultural and spiritual heritage. They are also exceptionally hospitable, warm, and welcoming of westerners, but see themselves as different and intend to remain so. “Gross National Happiness” (GNH) was a quote coined by the 4th King Jigme Singye Wangchuk, and is an operating concept of governance of Bhutan. You will gain a glimpse of all of this by watching our video review.

Bhutan is best enjoyed and explored as the journey of a lifetime. It is magical blend of evolved spirituality, uncommon goodness, physical beauty and fascinating culture which will, if only for a short while, encourage you to let go of all the ingredients that can crush your spirit in daily life.

Planning a trip to Bhutan

Every trip to Bhutan requires carefully planning and informed advice. First decide how long you wish to stay. We'd recommend 7-10 days, but you can also enjoy the kingdom in 5 as flying into the country is now easier than it used to be with connections from Bangkok, Singapore, New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Kathmandu. Indian visitors do not need a visa, but the rest of us do and only one airline flies into the kingdom.

In terms of accommodation there are various 5-star options, in lodges dotted across the country, from the foothills of the Himalyas to the lush valleys below. The simplest approach is to arrange a circular Amankora Journey with guide and driver, where we can take care of every detail and plan activities according to your preferences. Start by watching our video guide and reading our reviews - and then contact our concierge and start to plan the journey of a lifetime.
