Mauritius is the most accessible island in the Indian Ocean, with as much tropical paradise as Martinique or Maui and surrounded by a penetratingly blue sea with coral reefs and staggering sunsets. The stunning landscape ripples with volcanic skylines and pulsates with streams and waterfalls. The beaches are travel brochure perfect; acres of silky, white, soft sand.

After the abolition of slavery in the 1830s many Indian labourers were imported and today their descendants now comprise more than two-thirds of the population. Incorporated into the British Empire, Mauritius remained a colony until 1957, when it was granted internal self-government with an electoral system based on the Westminster model. Full independence was granted in 1968.

Mauritius is historically connected to the Dutch, the British, the Indian and the African, which has contributed to its unique multicultural status. The resultant peaceful social climate is as warm and affable at its meteorological character. Never once have we had a threatening vibe on this island, and we have stayed here many times, keeping in yearly contact with many talented and loving locals.
