5-Star X-Factors

The feeling of being one with this rugged luna-like landscape. Camp Sarika has added a luxury wilderness camp experience to Amangiri's repertoire

Amangiri

Nestled into the rugged Utah landscape in the Grand Canyon National Park, Amangiri is the sort of place you’d expect to find James Bond enjoying a well-crafted cocktail. Its seclusion is one of Amangiri's biggest draws, but the one-ness you feel with this most Wild West of landscapes has to be its greatest allure. Imagine stepping out onto your private terrace and watching the sun set over the dramatic landscape turning the mesas and rock formations from apricot to amber to dusky pink.

The stunning views are just part of the picture. Surrounded by thousands of miles of rugged scenery, Amangiri is close to the largest Native American Indian reservation in the US, imbuing the resort with a Navajo spirit not found elsewhere. Then there is the pure luxury of a beautifully designed resort that is both sympathetic to its surroundings and awe-inspiring at the same time.

The geology of the Grand Staircase-Escalante is extraordinary, and in order for Aman's founding father, Adrian Zecha, to build Amangiri in this staggering landscape of canyons, mesas, gorges, rivers and rapids, it actually required an Act of Congress to be passed. This passion and ambition to create somewhere truly special shines through and through this place.

Amangiri is perfectly positioned at the heart of the Grand Circle, within easy reach of the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park and Monument Valley Tribal Park, home of the Navajo Nation. The vast natural resevoir of Lake Powell is also nearby, where you can spend a half or a full day exploring its glassy waters, secluded bays and hidden canyons.

The best 5-star wilderness experience in the world?

Since Amangiri opened it has become a bucket list destination for those seeking a unique wilderness escape - a glimpse of the rugged Wild West in all its natural beauty, but without any disagreeable aspects. True, it gets more expensive every year to stay here, but that's because it's on every luxury explorer's bucketlist and is often vfully booked, despite the heady prices.

Each of the beautiful Desert and Mesa View Suites features folding floor-to-ceiling concertina glass windows that frame the landscape in ways that accentuate its natural beauty, where you watch the light paint different pictures during the day from ochre in the morning, to apricot at midday to dusky pink in the evening. Each has a private courtyard with table and chairs and sun loungers. Some have extra large terraces with fire pits and Pool Suites offer private infinity pools.

The two largest suites at the main resort are the Girijaala Suite and the Amangiri Suite both with expansive sun decks, lap pools and star gazing decks.

Inside, the suites offer relaxing Zen-imbued, open-plan living with clean contemporary lines, a huge king bed, sofa, fireplace/pit, writing table and spacious roof-lit bathrooms. The suite's sofas can double-up as an extra bed for kids, but there is also a vast 4-bedroom Mesa House for larger families or celebrations.

The resort's main pool is a real talking point, built into and around the rock escarpment, it invites you for a swim that you'll remember for a lifetime. Truly extraordinary!

The Orchard Suite was opened in 2022. Positioned on a mountain ridge close to the spa, you enter via a private orchard-lined courtyard to find a spacious 1,000 sq ft suite with dramatic views across the abutting mesa. This suite is ideal for those guests looking for their own private piece of Utah.

Wellness in mind, body and spirit

Wellness features prominently at Amangiri, with an emphasis on restoring 'hózhó', the local Navajo approach to beauty, harmony, balance and health. The 25,000 sq ft spa is extraordiunary and our contributing editor, Holly Rubenstein, visited recently to specifically review the Amangiri's pampering side and returned waxing lyrically about the serene sense of wellbeing she experienced.

There is one restaurant at Amangiri and, due to the secluded nature of the hotel, all rates include breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus group hiking with an expert guide. The menu is inspired by local Southwestern cuisine using locally sourced ingredients. The chef and his team serve you from an open kitchen, with stunning views over the pool through floor-to-ceiling windows. Try Ahi tuna crudo with chillies or Sea of Cortez prawns to start, with native lamb rack or filet mignon to follow.

Hiking is historic, both on property. and further afield, but, as a less strenuous alternative, enjoy a hot air balloon ride over the Climb for the best views of Lake Powell and the Vermillion Cliffs, or take to the unique landscape on horseback. Whatever you do you must spend some time discovering the cultural heritage of the Navajo.

For adrenalin junkies, a guided climb on the Cave Peak Stairway, a via ferrata (or 'iron road') suspended 100 metres above the desert floor, provides thrills and unforgettably vast vistas across the canyons of Southern Utah.

Camp Sarika

In July 2020 Amangiri's new tented camp opened to international acclaim. Camp Sarika is a 5-minute drive from the main resort, where 10 one and two-bedroom tented pavilions nestle into the desert landscape. Each is spacious featuring over-size terraces complete with plunge pools and fire pits, where you can revel in majestic sunrises and sunsets.

Combining a stay at the resort with a few nights at Camp Sarika is the new bucketlist goal for every luxury explorer, bringing one of the USA's great National Parks into a uniquely luxurious perspective.

Mesas and mountains

e think the ultimate US National Parks experience is to combine a stay at Amangiri with a contrasting mountain escape to Amangiri's sister property, Amangani near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. We can even arrange transfers and private flights between Page Municipal Airport and Jackson Hole, to ensure the mesas and mountains experience blends into one seamless adventure.
