Where your mind is sure to wonder

For a luxury 5-star Robinson Crusoe vibe, where all your senses are caressed into an hypnotic state of tropical island equanimity, take to Six Senses Samui on Thailand's island of Koh Samui.

It’s a tropical ocean-hugging hideaway in which to indulge body and soul with naturally healing properties only nature can provide.  Located just 6 kilometers from Samui Airport, and only 45 minutes from Bangkok, it's an uncomplicated journey for a genuinely enriching return.

There are 66-luxury organically-designed villas built from local wood and bamboo, with stepped terraces, infinity pools (58 of them), and a plethora of tropical foliage to keep them private. The ocean facing Pool Villas have our vote, while the two-bedroom Retreat, with sweeping views across the Gulf of Thailand, is now on my bucket list. They are all cossetted by the nature in which they are blissfully nestled, creating a sense of exotic escape with all the creature comforts afforded by a 5-star resort.

Our Sea-Suite Pleasures

Upon entering our private paradise we were consumed by the wondrous proximity of turquoise ocean. The sense of sea and not being seen strips the body of jetlag in an instant. Opening the sliding pannel of windows we inhaled the heady scent of frangipani that cloaked the warm tropical breeze along with the sweeping view. Our wooden deck, below, was full of holiday promise with a sparkling pool, loungers topped with plump sun-yellow cushions, and a sale perfect for chilling and cocktails. Crisp red and green apples were piled in a bowl beside cold bottles of water, along with a welcome note. We clocked it all but not the time of day: you come here to unwind.

Our suite had a king-size bed, dressed in soft Egyptian cotton, and a sofa that was easily transformed into a very comfortable sofa-bed, making it very practical for a couple with a little one. The suites are designed and furnished in keeping with its privileged setting, as you can’t compete with Nature’s creation. As a result, the wooden floors, the white drapes above your bed, and the sunken marble toffee-toned bathroom, complete with an outdoor shower, all blend in a treat, while the palette standout of apple green marks a striking and contemporary contrast.

It’s island-rustic-chic here with all the hands-on necessities of the post-naughties tucked discreetly in and around the resort.  The service is swift and polite and the suites come with a personal butler for the duration of your stay. You could just chill for a week, within the comfort of your suite, enjoying dips in the infinity pool, sipping cocktails under the sale and reclining poolside, while the sea puts on its ever changing tidal show of ships, yachts, fisherman, sportsman, dolphins and sunsets. However, there is also a cornucopia of pampering on offer as well as excursions on land and sea: pleasures for all the senses. You can even leave the resort, realising that there is a whole island out there to explore. That is, if you don’t get addicted to the spa!

Six Senses Spa – a treatment for all the senses

This is where I fell in love with the resort. This spa is an uncomplicated tropical healing centre that delivers the promise in print and more. In my own private treatment room, which felt like a perfect tree house perched above the piercingly aquamarine sea, like a gift from the sea gods, I was transported into a blissful zone of recharge and relax. I chose the Nourishing Ritual, one of many gorgeous options; a therapeutic 2.5hrs than could have extended to 5hrs – and I don’t normally like treatments longer than an hour.

This treatment is a whole body programme based on an Oriental philosophy that restores, replenishes and embraces, both the inner and outer self, using natural elements to specifically suit your own needs. This bespoke treatment is planned on arrival after discussing the 'menu' with the therapist, which includes choosing the oil fragrance, specific areas of the body that require more attention, the preferred pressure of the massage, along with anything else that may benefit the process. The result is something truly special and you can, as I did, open the panoramic windows and let the soundtrack of sea and birdsong permeate this heavenly renovation.

The sense that feeds off the plate…

Six Senses Samui has a reputation for some of the finest cuisine on the island. For casual everyday dining, Dining On The Hill offers a blended menu of Thai and contemporary dishes at lunchtime, but goes all-out Thai in the evenings. It enjoys a resplendent location overlooking the Gulf of Thailand making this a fabulous spot to feast the eyes too, while a great wine list provides many options to soothe the kick from the heat, both on and off the plate. There is also Wines On The Hill, which brags a well-stocked cellar of wines sourced from across the globe, while the bar here is stylish and relaxed with a chill-out vibe, as well as highly accomplished mixologists. However, the real cuisine treat, which is more of a gastronomic journey or gourmet experience, is at the multi-award winning Dining On The Rocks.

As the name implies, this restaurant, an island standout, is perched on a rocky outcrop at the highest point of the resort, with a view to die(ne) for, 270-degrees of tropical ocean splendour. This alone is a reason to reserve a table however, the restaurant’s cuisine is a genuine surprise. It’s an accomplished tour de force in contemporary culinary creativity, offering plates that are beautifully presented, using fabulous seasonal ingredients with very clever twists, along with carefully selected wines to compliment each course. Many of the fresh ingredients are sourced from their very own eco farm, which is based at the resort.

Spearheaded by the talented and innovative chef, Giancarlo Caffaro, this restaurant is worth booking, no matter where you are staying on Koh Samui. Its signature dish called simply ‘Chicken and Egg’ is world class. The service is gracious, smooth and informed, while the avant-garde Giancarlo makes his own appearance at each table, making this a personal, memorable and gastronomic experience with a Dionysian setting. I can only imagine the number of ‘proposals’ that have taken place here? If you use your sixth sense, it’s a guaranteed ‘yes’.
