After the 1950’s the houses were restored as holiday villas and today offer authentic charm that encapsulates the essence of rural Umbria. The gardens are extremely pretty, landscaped but not precious, as this is not precious countryside, it’s blissfully unscathed.  The large swimming pool, with sweeping mountain views, along with a Turkish steam room and shower, is shared by all the borgo guests, though all three houses can be rented as a single booking, accommodating up to 21 guests for a perfect multi-family or group getaway.

The houses offer affordable simple luxury, totally in keeping with their surrounds, while the landscape is brought inside with exposed rock walls and natural features in most rooms. This is somewhere to really connect with the Umbrian countryside, while the nearby ancient towns of Spoleto, Assisi, Spello, Perugia and Montefalco offer exceptional excursions as well as some sensational restaurants, at astonishingly reasonable prices. Umbrian wines are a real discovery if you are not familiar, especially the red wines of Montefalco.

Casa Dell’Arco

This is the largest of the three, sleeping 8 comfortably and situated at the top of Borgo, in a prime location. It has some extraordinary indoor stone features, including the archway in the sitting room, after which the house is named. It has a terrace for alfresco dining and sweeping views down onto the estate and across the mountainous terrain of Umbria.

CASA DEL CIPRESSO

These are the converted and exceptionally charming old stables of the hamlet with a large covered outdoor terrace, a perfect place for dining and relaxing and a beautiful large garden. It is decorated in a simple traditional style, comfortable and in keeping.

CASA DELLA ROCCIA

We stayed in this charming house in April. Casa della Roccia was the old sheepfold and is named after the rock on which it was built. The exposed rock is a fabulous feature in the kitchen and the downstairs bathroom, emitting a cosy cave-like feeling. These dwellings are not sophisticated, they are stylish in a genuine rustic way that appeals very much to your primal senses. You leave with a sense of yearning to return, to feel that connection with the countryside, where the luxury is quite simply in its authentic and unembellished style.
