5-star hotel guide to Lake Garda

As the largest of the Italian lakes, at the edge of the Dolomites equidistant between Verona and Brescia and conveniently accessible from Venice, Lake Garda's stunning setting has been a popular destination for travellers for centuries.

The northern section of this north-south facing lake is narrower and surrounded by mountains and the southern part broadens out with pretty villages and towns like Sirmione dotting the shoreline. There are many small islands and five notable large ones, the largest of which is Isola del Garda, where in 1220 Saint Francis of Assisi founded a monastry.

Lake Garda's mild climate attracts year-round visitors and favours Mediterranean plants, including olive and lemon trees, even as far north as Riva del Garda. In the lovely lakeside village of Gargano you will find our favourite hotel in Italy and one of the finest 'country house hotels' in the world - Villa Feltrinelli an immaculate 5-star boutique hotel with 20 suites, a 2 Michelin star restaurant and impeccable luxury credentials. This is a very special place to combine with the opera in Verona or a trip into the Dolomites. It's also the perfect destination in itself for a 5-star romantic escape, or an extra-special place to celebrate one of life's major milestones.

Lake Garda combines natural glacial beauty with a fascinating history and a wonderful luxury hotel - one of our favourites in the whole wide world.
