5-Star X-Factors

Pure bliss! Adults-only wellness retreat with stunning Ionian Sea views

F ZEEN

F ZEEN translates as ‘bliss’ and this exclusive hideaway really does live up to its name.

F ZEEN Kefalonia is nestled exclusively into 10 acres of verdant vegetation on a hillside beneath the dramatic Mount Ainos, facing the brilliant blues of the Ionian Sea. All accommodation is an easy walk to the private beach. The focus on wellbeing is discreetly immersed into the ethos and spirit of the resort. Four large yoga decks are tucked within bougainvillea, banana leaves, olives, and jasmine, along with two fully equipped gyms, all facing the sparkling blue, while the blissful Idor Spa is in the main building.

Your Private Stay

An adult-only resort, there are several types of accommodation with supporting price tags, but honestly, all are outstanding value. Stylishly decorated in earthy tones, with textured walls and individual furnishings, they all benefit from exceptional views and total privacy.

The Classic and Garden Rooms enjoy private terraces with nature entwined seamlessly, while beach- facing classics are a few minutes’ walk to the turquoise sea. We stayed in suite 105, a ‘superior raw retreat with pool’ — a deep, blissfully refreshing, L-shaped sea-facing infinity pool. At night we kept our French sliding doors, which opened onto our private terrace furnished with sunbeds and separate seating areas, wide open to the elements so we could drift off to the sound of soft lapping waves. What’s more, the wrap-around curtain is black-out, so sleep here is wonderfully deep, while the bed, the linen, and the pillows are top notch.

The hillside villas — one, two, and three bedrooms — have panoramic sea views and can be enjoyed as an exclusive villa-style holiday. Carrying the same palette of taupe, off-white, and earth, they are stylish and chic and, as with everywhere at F ZEEN, complement the magical outdoors. The three- bedroom villa has two ensuite double bedrooms with king-size beds and private terraces on the first floor. Downstairs there is another ensuite double bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen with dining table, and a spacious living room with a built-in fireplace, all facing the Ionian blue. Outside, a shaded terrace looks across the pool to the sea, with daybeds, loungers, rattan bucket chairs, and a built-in BBQ tucked around a corner. The feel here is beautifully bespoke: you can tailor your stay in total or partial exclusivity.

Wellness, Fitness, and the Spa

The four yoga decks offer Vinyasa, Yin, aerial, and pre/post-natal yoga, and daily reformer Pilates classes are also available, alongside two further high-spec outdoor gyms. The beauty here is not only the setting but also the relaxed approach to the various desires of their guests. You can do as much or as little as your body desires, and the three outdoor freshwater pools are perfect for early morning lengths. The sea can be so tranquil that paddle boards are lined up next to the beachside bar, but for us it was the glorious iridescent sea that constantly beckoned.

The Idor Spa is a genuinely tranquil haven with three distinct areas: treatment rooms, steam rooms, and a hammam. Inspired by ancient Greek concepts — Sophrosyne (harmony and self-knowledge) and Eudaimonia (the art of flourishing) — they specialise in holistic treatments using locally sourced wild herbs, olive oil, botanical ingredients, and secret ones too. We both had a 60-minute massage using the F ZEEN oil “Athens,” a must take-away. It was one of the most remarkable treatments I can recall, from the healing hands of therapist Aliki: a gift from the gods.

Dining and Service

One of the main reasons I am going back with my daughter is the F ZEEN team. The overall experience at the resort is so uplifting that it ceases to feel like a commercial transaction; it feels like a genuine human sanctuary, created by the warm, professional, relaxed, and caring members of the F ZEEN family. You feel valued and cared for rather than merely attended to, which allows you dissolve the friction of daily life, set aside the anxiety of travel, and feel completely safe in their hands. This, above all, is what lets you truly unwind.

There are two restaurants: Selini, outside the reception area with indoor and outdoor seating facing the sea beside the stepped infinity pools and palms, and Gaia further down for lunch and seasonal BBQs, with seating around another gorgeous pool and under a shaded pergola. There is also a beach bar for cocktails, healthy shakes, and small bites, along with service directly on the beach

Breakfast at Selini, looking across the dazzling sea to the island of Zakynthos, offers both buffet and à la carte and is quite simply world class. Ingredients are locally sourced and home-grown, and the best of Greek — yogurt, fruits, honey, souvlaki, gyros, feta, olive oil and more — is some of the finest in all of Europe, showcased phenomenally here. Food is reasonably priced and the menus offer a variety of dishes, vegan and non. We were both drawn to the simpler plates: fresh snapper, squid, feta salads, cooked, seasoned, and prepared to the highest standard. Dinner at sunset at Selini is very special, with a variety of dishes both traditional and contemporary, and a refined nod to the region and the chef’s garden.

The Locale and Island of Kefalonia

Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian Sea and arguably the most unspoilt. Its scale does not mean crowded — more mountainous, wild, and coastal, with a layered identity. Venetian, French, British, and Greek rulers have all left their marks on the architecture, dialect, and cuisine. Tavernas grow their own vegetables; locals gather in the village square surrounded by plane trees; and the overall feeling is one of deep peace.

The resort itself is magnificently framed by Mount Ainos as its backdrop, with the silhouette of Zakynthos shimmering on the horizon. The beach is a mix of sand and pebbles, and the sea a vibrant turquoise and deep cobalt blue. The pure white limestone seabed acts as a lightbox, bouncing sunlight back up through the water column rather than simply reflecting it — a phenomenon that lends the clear water a neon, luminous quality, making your stay feel all the more transporting.

There are direct flights to Kefalonia airport, followed by a picturesque 30-minute drive to the resort. This is a place where you really can enjoy nature and nurture without a swarm of tourists; where simple pleasures afford the greatest luxuries.
