5-Star X-Factors

Perfectly polished luxury in the heart of the Medina with some of the best food in Marrakech - enjoyed in a sublime setting beside the midnight-blue pool

Magic in the Medina

Referred to as a ‘palace of pleasures’, La Villa des Orangers is a ‘riad of riches’, a private Marrakech oasis that has combined North African influences with authentic craftsmanship and wonderful cuisine. Located only five minutes from the Katoubia Mosque, between the Royal Palace and the Jemaa El Fna Square, this 5-star riad is up there with the most exceptional luxury boutique hotels, anywhere in the world.

Built in the 1930’s as a classic villa for a local judge, it was converted in 1998 into a luxury hotel with a keen focus on traditional detail and refined elegance. Local artisans spent months respecting original artistry while the owners, Veronique and Pascal Beherec, instilled notes of Africa along with French Colonial, making La Villa des Orangers quite unique in its exotic and eclectic blend of outstanding petit-luxe delights.

The Riad

The riad is built around four glorious open courtyards framed by exquisitely chiselled Moorish plasterwork, central fountains, and a cornucopia of cascading foliage. It leaves you positively spellbound. Aside from enjoying the soundtrack of songbird and fountain in these wonderful spaces, there are also three different, beautifully fashioned, lounges, including a grand winter lounge with a roaring fire for cooler nights in the winter months. There is a comforting feel of homeyness here, albeit fabulously luxurious. There is also a stylish boutique with an interesting selection of designer kaftans, fabrics, jewelry and leather goods, so it’s worth budgeting for a little spree in there.

Suite Slumber

There are 27 rooms and suites, all different, and all resplendent in their own unique way. We had a junior suite with a totally private walled roof terrace complete with loungers, a shower, a dining area and a profusion of scented jasmine. The bathroom was super slick and extremely large, with a freestanding cast iron bath, twin vanities, earthy grey polished plaster walls, and long test tubes filled with gorgeous lotions and potions. Ornate mirrors hang on all the walls and the lighting was theatrically flattering. We adored the original tiled floor in the open plan living area, the ebony furniture, and the chestnut leather seats. Beside our princely dressed bed were long French windows, adorned by a plume of paper-thin beige linen, which opened up onto a profusion of silver olive boughs that bustled with songbirds beneath a soft pink sky.

Oasis-Style Dining

There are three swimming pools with spotless cream sun loungers and poolside service. Taking centre stage is the largest, an aesthetically flawless 16-metre pool, which doubles-up as the centerpiece for romantic al fresco dining in the evenings. There is another on the roof terrace, which enjoys far reaching views over the city towards the Atlas Mountains, as well as a private plunge pool in the exclusive two-suite riad. However, the highlight of our stay was dining beside the midnight blue oasis, which radiates a special light show under the starry constellations, complemented by perfectly-lit olive trees. It is a memory to revisit for all time and, hopefully, re-live in real time, many times over. Being a Relais & Chateaux member, the cuisine is paramount. The seasonal menu offers a delectable blend of Mediterranean, Moroccan and French dishes, with a diverse and impressive cellar to match, including some excellent local wines. The dining service is a genuine 10/10 here and the finest in the Medina.

The Healing Spa

Le Spa is another world of sensual Nuxe-products-pleasures. It’s like an underground sanctuary of all things bodily blissful. The wondrous scent of orange blossom, rose petal and Huile Prodigieuses, instantly consumes you. Filigreed lanterns, reflecting a surround of latticework shadows, softly illuminate the massage rooms, while the authentic hammam and Moroccan baths take you a step further into the ancient traditions of the Orient. The treatment menu is extensive and the skilled therapists are happy to customize your treatment according to your needs. It’s a real treat for body and soul in here.

A Crowd Standout

There are many charming riads and luxury hotels in Marrakech, however La Villa des Orangers is a luxury standout because it combines a uniquely discerning style and refined splendour with a palatial slickness that, simply put, is unrivalled.

It is also ideally located for dips in and around the Medina and its souks, while the outstanding concierge team will assist in all matters within and outside the city walls. This includes day trips into the mountains or the desert, in the knowledge that your safety and satisfaction are paramount.

For us at Luxury Explorer La Villa des Orangers is a ‘must stay without delay’ luxury hotel hotspot. What’s more, the General Manager, Jean-Paul Compagnon, goes out of his way to ensure your wish list is met to the very highest of luxury home-from-home standards.
