Mauritius - The Oberoi

It is difficult not to eulogise about this island. It is also quite difficult, in our opinion, to go over-the-top. The reasons for this are plentiful and the result is homogenously refreshing. Most folk who write about Mauritius quote Mark Twain's comparison with heaven, debating which came first; though it is the Mauritian people themselves who are still undecided.

Where to Romance this celestial land - The Oberoi Mauritius

Staying in luxury while maintaining the unique spirit of an island such as this is often a hard task, though The Oberoi has achieved this with exemplary skill.

The resort is located in 20 acres of beautiful sub-tropical gardens with a 600-metre oceanfront.

All the 72 glorious, authentically thatched Terrace Pavilion Rooms have enormous four-poster beds, sunken marble baths and exotic views of the ocean. They are decorated in subtle tones allowing nature to steal the show, though the ebony sculptures and headboards woven from sugarcane leaf do not go unnoticed. The hotel Villas have their own lush garden and a dining gazebo overlooking a private pool. However, some may opt for views of God's pool.

The food here is exceptional using local ingredients to create mouthwatering Indo-Creole dishes as well as simple Mediterranean fare.

The Location

The Oberoi Mauritius is situated in the northwest corner of Mauritius; the leeward side of the Island. The windward side can, literally, hamper your ability to exhale. So it's sheltered, benefits from breathtaking ocean sunsets, and is less than an hour or so from the airport.

The Sublime Spa

Thai therapists (arguably the greatest in this highly competitive arena) are on hand to massage and sooth, drawing on holistic treatments from Ayurveda, aromatherapy and Eastern techniques. Set against a backdrop any artist would struggle to recreate, you can also enjoy yoga and meditation sessions with trained and inspiring teachers.

The Oberoi, Mauritius

Mauritius is in many ways our favourite Island retreat. It blends an island vibe with luxury in a way that makes you go back for more. Not surprisingly, we have revisited three times in five years because it never fails to get the family vote. That is not to say, however, that it isn't perfect for couples as well.

Although The Oberoi Mauritius is one of the world's premier luxury destinations, with its unspoilt natural assets hugging an exquisite turquoise Indian Ocean, it maintains a laid back attitude and has a culture borne out of a very well melted pot. The French influence has merged with its Indian counterpart creating an offspring with unique charm and character. We never once felt threatened or unwanted, and yet the attitude is not obsequiously compliant either. It is all very natural here: a little like welcoming familiar friends.

Where is this Mauritian marvel?

The hotel is situated in the northwest corner of Mauritius, the leeward side of the Island. The windward side can literally hamper your ability to exhale. It lies along the unspoilt Baie aux Tortues, or Turtle Bay, where the location is perfect and it is near the town of Grand Baie, with its fabulous restaurants, boutiques and famous yacht club. It is a great place for all generations. Just outside this colourful town is a Ralph Lauren "outlet", (there are several on Mauritius). I think we managed to buy every colour in every size for under $200. Buy big however, as they tend to shrink!

The Oberoi is nestled under thatch, which is a charming and extremely attractive feature in this part of the world (and the thatch is treated to repel creepy crawlies). Moreover, there are no snakes or spiders to speak of on Mauritius. From the 73 luxury thatched terraced pavilions you have spectacular panoramic views of the Ocean. The Indian Ocean never disappoints and having the milder weather here, the sea is rarely turbulent. The sunsets are some of the most dramatic and staggering events we have had the pleasure of beholding and easily half the rolls of film are taken between six and seven pm, sipping tropical tequila sunsets made with fresh ingredients.

The vegetation is lush, lush, lush. They call it semi-tropical but it feels wonderfully tropical and unique. The islands of Mauritius, Reunion and Rodrigues have never been linked to mainland Africa. The first elements of the indigenous flora were transported to the islands by sea currents, winds, tropical storms and migrating birds or birds carried away to the islands by cyclonic winds.

The S Factors...

Swimming

Swimming right in front of the hotel is a many-times-a-day imperative. It's warm, calm and refreshing, but you can also dip in the sensational pool or have a pool all to yourself.

Sunsets

Staggeringly beautiful. Turner would never have looked elsewhere.

Starlit dinners

You can dine around the pillars of the amazing dining area enjoying some of the best Creole creations on earth, or go simple and sit, toes in sand, under the light of the Milkyway with adorable little frogs serenading their memorable songs.

Swanky bathroom

The Oberoi in Mauritius was the Tatler winner for "Best Bathroom", well as we all know a fantastic bathroom means the rest must be very special as well. Reclining in a bath centered under a beautiful glass dome is sheer indulgence. So is a sunken marble bath with views out to sea. Take your pick, they're both there.

Spa

Spa junkies need look no farther; you can even be massaged in fresh coconut, I prefer to eat it but, for some, this is utterly sensational. The Spa at the Oberoi, is considered an exclusive sanctuary and offers all the state-of-the-art treatments and some local ones too. There is also a fitness area, equipped with all the mean machines to keep the bulk from dimpling.

Snorkeling and Sailing

The snorkeling here is lovely. It's not the Maldives, it's a little harder than that with water that is more ocean-like than lake-like, and fewer tropical fish, but there are many species to find and it is a breeding ground for turtles. You can enjoy an amazing trip out on a catamaran to little islands with wonderful snorkeling and you can have a barbeque on board with all the trimmings. It can be an extremely memorable day out.

The Oberoi really delivers Luxury to perfection and, on an Island that is both interesting and beautiful. A five star choice!!!
