The Grand Hotel Europe is the best in Russia

Upon returning from travels around Russia, people talk not so much about the beautiful nature they have seen, but about a good room in a good hotel far from the capital. Afisha World magazine decided to see for itself, and published a report on fifty hotels worth visiting in the most interesting parts of the country.

Each hotel was awarded a number of marks based on the personal experience of journalists from the magazine, and on the level of comfort of the rooms and quality of service.  The hotels were compared on three criteria: The presence of certain conveniences in the rooms, the services available and the location of the hotel.  The Grand Hotel Europe came top of the list of the best Russian hotels, with 98 marks out of a possible 100.

This is the latest award on a long list of honours received by the hotel, including:

- Gold List 2007, a register of the top 700 hotels and resorts in the world compiled by Conde Nast Traveler magazine.
- T+L 500 List, a register of the best 500 hotels and resorts in the world compiled by Travel + Leisure magazine.  In 2006 the hotel was included on this list for the fourth time.
- In 2005 the hotel was named one of the top twenty business hotels in Europe.
- In 2005, Institutional Investor magazine awarded the hotel 34th place in the best 50 hotels in the world.

The Grand Hotel Europe is one of the oldest hotels in Russia, and was the first five-star hotel in the country.  Its historic building, built in 1824, has undergone thorough reconstruction during which the hotel’s Art Nouveau interiors and façade, designed by the famous architect Rossi, have been preserved.  Modern conveniences have only enhanced the luxurious atmosphere of a bygone age that characterises the hotel.  In December 1991 the hotel reopened its doors to guests after extensive renovation.

Many of the hotel’s rooms, restaurants and hallways contain the same antique furniture, sculptures and paintings that decorated its interiors during the last century.  The building itself is a site of artistic and historic value and is protected by the state.

During 2005-2008 the hotel has been undergoing reconstruction and refining.  220 hotel rooms have been renovated, including nine deluxe suites, the historic interior of the Caviar Bar restaurant has been restored, and the hotel’s main entrance has been renovated.  At present the reconstruction of the Mezzanine café, which now contains a real fireplace, is coming to an end.
