Ercolano

According to the present knowledge, Herculaneum is defined as an italic city founded around 4th century BC copying the geometric plan of Naples. During the eruption of 79 AC the city was covered by flood of mud coming from the montainsides of the Vesuvius which solidified, becoming like tufa stone and created during centuries the best protection against atmospherical events and clandestine excavators. The excavations started in 1709 and from 1738 till 1765 King Charles of Bourbon ordered to make systematic explorations. The open air excavation in the entire area started in 1927.
