Aside from Sir William Dalrymple, another figure to have a profound influence on the development of Westcliff was Raymond Schumacher (1871 – 1944). Educated at Harrow and boasting an apparently impeccable British pedigree, the German ancestry of his father.
Schumacher selected one of the finest sites on Westcliff Ridge for his home and commissioned Baker to design it – Pallinghurst, a particularly attractive building rising majestically from the ridge. Schumacher and his wife Hope and their daughter Hazel lived at Pallinghurst until 1916, when strong anti-German feelings became so threatening, the family returned to England.
The Schumachers donated Pallinghurst for use as a convalescent home which became established as the Hope Convalescent Home, named after Mrs Hope Schumacher, and continues to operate as such today. |
