Moyo
Zoo Lake, Westcliff
Tel:  (011) 646 0058

One of the best venues in Johannesburg to enjoy an all-African dining experience is Moyo Zoo Lake,  recently opened in the glorious parklands of the historic Zoo Lake, right on the doorstep of The Westcliff hotel.

Moyo offers guests a touch of Africa, from Ethiopia and Tunisia in the north right down to Zululand on the south-eastern coast of South Africa. It is so much more than a restaurant, it is an experience incorporating storytellers, marimba bands and mime artists.

The Bedouin/Moroccan themed outdoor restaurant with relaxing loungers and Pan-African themed decor, allows guests feel that they are far away from the metropolis of Johannesburg, whilst they enjoy the ambience of the parklands and fresh air, whilst perusing the decidedly imaginative pan-African menu. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and sundowner cocktails.

The Westcliff is a short five-minute drive from the bustling and colourful neighbourhoods of Melville, Greenside and Parkhurst (also known as "Little Chelsea".)  In addition to interestingly renovated character homes, these communities boast an eclectic array of trendy specialist stores, charming antique shops and a vibrant nightlife with bistro’s, bars and restaurants catering to a wide variety of tastes.  Some of these top spots close to The Westcliff include:

A good, value for money fusion restaurant.   The menu is short but interesting, the waiters knowledgeable and the ambience good.

“In addition to being one of the first multi-racial bars in Joburg, Kippies has played a huge part in building South Africa’s glorious jazz legacy. Some of the world’s best performers have played here, including Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masakela.  Top jazz bands and musicians play on Fridays and Saturdays from 21h30 and Thursday nights are dedicated to promoting young, up-and-coming acts.  Music lovers gather in this tiny, informal venue that is both nostalgically old-fashioned and ineffably part of South Africa’s vibrant present.” (pg 43, 2005 Time Out Johannesburg)
