The Johannesburg Zoological Gardens

This 54-acre expanse of enclosures set amongst trees and gardens makes for a pleasant family or group outing.  Ferry rides and club cars are available for those who prefer to drive and night tours can be arranged.

Zoo Lake

A perennially popular venue for walking or feeding the ducks, Zoo Lake’s appeal has hit an all time high with the opening of the chic Afro-fusion Moyo Restaurant (Tel: 011-646 0058). The Moyo Magic children’s workshops are a great way to keep the littlies busy while Mum and Dad enjoy time out.

An excursion to this wildlife conservation project (with a special focus on cheetahs) comes highly recommended. 

Pilanesberg National Park
Pilanesberg Game Reserve

The park encompasses a great tract of wild bush that covers the world's largest alkaline ring complex - a geological feature of volcanic origin. It contains 'The Big Five', including a newly acquired herd of young elephant. Guided game drives on open vehicles are available. Adjacent to Sun City.

Rhino Nature Reserve

Open: Daily from 08:00 to 17:00.
The Rhino Nature Reserve is a privately owned game reserve, situated in the Kromdraai Conservancy. The reserve covers an area of approximately 1,000 hectares where you can view more than 20 different species of game, including white rhino, buffalo, giraffe, hippo and lion.

Heia Safari Ranch

Untamed Africa 45 kilometres from Johannesburg. Game roam in natural surroundings. Spend an evening in a Zulu kraal. On Sundays, watch the Mzumba Dancers performing age-old legends accompanied by throbbing drums and chanting women.

Lion Safari Park
(Tel: 011-460 1814)
Open: Every day from 09:00 to 17:00.
This magnificent park is located just 30 kilometres north of Johannesburg and comprises 200 hectares of grassland and forest. Many species of game are visible from the game trails. The actual lion area consists of six, well-fenced camps in which various prides of lions live and breed.
