Built on seven hills, the Portuguese capital lies at the mouth of the Tagus River, looking out towards the Atlantic Ocean and onto the world that it explored and conquered during the Golden Age of Discovery.

The city is testament to its heritage, from the Manueline buildings in Belém to the medieval Alfama and the Neoclassical Baixa district.

Known for its laid-back style, you can explore the tangle of streets from one of the creaky trams, shop in the Baixa or stop for a coffee in the famous Café A Brasileira.

Culture:  Well-known for its wide variety of fish and meat, Portuguese cuisine is also distinctly rich in seafood. Typical dishes: Bolinhos, Sopra da Pedra (stone soup), Carne de Porco Alentejano. Pastries: Torraddas and Pastéis de nata.  In June and July Lisbon celebrates many popular saints days with street parties and events.
