Cape Town's most famous hotel

The Basics
Located in the heart of Cape Town’s vibrant cultural centre, within a sprawling lush garden estate, close to the V&A Waterfront and some of the world’s best beaches, Mount Nelson Hotel is the city’s most distinguished luxury hotel, with a romantic heritage, a timeless sense of style and elegance, and an unsurpassed commitment to service excellence. Whether traveling for business or leisure, a family holiday, a honeymoon or a solo adventure, Mount Nelson Hotel is an urban sanctuary in a world where privacy is the new luxury, and pleasure is all about peace and serenity.

An Elegant Heritage
Mount Nelson Hotel, the brainchild of shipping magnate Sir Donald Currie, opened its doors on 6 March 1899. Its colourful history encompasses the Anglo-Boer war, the First and Second World Wars, royal guests, notorious guests and people famous for being famous. In the past few years it’s undergone a few nips and tucks here and there, but its essence remains unchanged. In 1988 the hotel was purchased by Orient-Express Hotels, Trains and Cruises (www.orient-express.com), a company famous for offering some of the world’s most romantic leisure travel experiences, resulting in upgrades and improvements in every area of the hotel.

A Room with a View
Mount Nelson Hotel is spread out over four accommodation wings, each with its own distinctive style and character. No two rooms are the same, but one thing all rooms have in common is a sense of understated elegance, privacy and serene seclusion, set against the backdrop of Table Mountain, and the hotel’s gardens. Each of the hotel’s 144 rooms and 57 suites (201 bedrooms in total) has been individually decorated in the hotel’s signature style. Sumptuous fabrics, bespoke furniture and collector’s artworks create a welcoming space that’s a sophisticated home away from home, with enough creature comforts to make it appealing to all types of travelers.

The World on a Plate
Mount Nelson Hotel is synonymous with fine dining and some of the best cuisine in Cape Town. Executive Chef Ian Mancais’s global cuisine is inspired by the city’s culinary heritage with influences ranging from Africa to Malaysia. From world famous Afternoon Tea served daily from the Windsor Table in the hotel lounge, to laid back alfresco lunches at Oasis Restaurant, to Cape Colony restaurant’s sophisticated traditional or contemporary fusion palate pleasers, and Planet Champagne Bar’s chic cocktails and canapés – there’s something for everyone, to suit every occasion.

The Main Event
The hotel’s lush garden setting has made it famous for being the most sought after venue for weddings and events, and its six banqueting venues play host to many memorable occasions. From the grand Ballroom with its decadent cream, gold and ruby red interior, to the Orchid Room and Green Park’s fresh botanical themed backdrops, to the Garden Room and the Lord Nelson Room’s formal wood paneled settings, and the Grill Room’s retro equestrian theme. An on site Kosher kitchen is available for Jewish events, and the hotel’s team of chefs will always try to accommodate other special dietary requirements.

Purity, Therapy, Luxury
Mount Nelson Hotel’s sparkling new Librisa Spa is set to become one of Cape Town’s leading day spas. Treatments are world class and have been developed uniquely for the spa.  The focus here is on the therapeutic healing power of touch, and treatments incorporating products derived from natural botanical extracts. The spas three signature product ranges are the locally produced Africology and Victorian Garden, and French brand Algologie. Housed in three original Victorian heritage buildings, décor is an eclectic combination of timeless elegance and contemporary style. Spa facilities include: innovative changing areas containing saunas and steam baths, sensation showers; small plunge pools and heated marble slabs; eight oversize treatment rooms including specially designed couples treatment rooms; specialised manicure and pedicure rooms; and a tranquil conservatory for pre and post treatment relaxation.

Going Green
Mount Nelson Hotel’s nine acres of garden is lovingly maintained by resident horticulturalist Paul Rice. In summer the garden is a riot of pinks, yellows, whites and violets as roses and other vibrant blooms blossom, perfectly timed to coincide with the hotel’s high season. Come winter, the display is no less impressive, with the garden transforming into a succulent wonderland of leafy greens. Throughout the year, the hotel’s garden is the perfect urban oasis to retreat to. Also of interest is the hotel’s worm farm project – an eco initiative using vermiculture to process organic food scraps into fertiliser to feed the hotel gardens.

Family Fun
Mount Nelson Hotel’s ample gardens provide the ideal environment for children to run free, while parents unwind with complete peace of mind. The Guest Services team is always on hand to recommend the city’s best family restaurants, suggest destinations for educational excursions, and arrange babysitting services.
