Cape Floral Environment and Cape Fynbos at Grootbos

The Cape has a unique flourishing flora which makes the area within the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve particularly special, as it seeks to uphold this famous Cape floral environment called Fynbos within its boundaries.

The reserve forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom which has been named as one of the richest and most diverse plant kingdoms in the world. There are only six floral kingdoms on Earth, and the Cape Floral Kingdom is the smallest. Within the reserve, there are more than 650 plant species indigenous to South Africa. The Grootbos Reserve contains one of a few Milkwood forests found on the Agulhas Plains, whilst the remains of Afromontane trees are also found at Grootbos submerged in sand.

The Cape Fynbos is a particular favourite because of its diversity and many different species. Five new fynbos species have been discovered at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve and yet more species are predicted to be discovered. The Cape floral environment and the fynbos of the reserve is also popular because it contains many different species which flower at different times during the year, thus allowing guests at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve to see flowering fynbos, no matter what the season is.

The reserve also contains 1,000-year-old Milkwood forests, many different species of proteas (the national flower of South Africa) and 102 Red data species. The proteas flower in an array of different colours and create a cheerful and bright landscape whilst the Milkwood forests provide a regal sight of indigenous dark-green foliage.
