Grootbos is very proud to add a new bird species to our list. Last week we were lucky to spot the Malachite Kingfisher (Alcedo cristata). It is a river kingfisher, which is widely distributed in Southern Africa, but we haven’t spottet it on our property before. The Malachite Kingfisher is a small bird, 13 cm in length and with a general bright metallic blue colour of the upper parts. The head has a short crest of black and blue feathers and the face, cheeks and underparts are rufous with white patches on the throat and rear neck side!
