The Golden Age of Couture

‘The Golden Age of Couture’ exhibition at the V&A Museum

Christian Dior’s New Look of 1947 heralded a new era of glamour in Paris and London. Characterised by nipped-in waists and full skirts, the style was a welcome departure from the minimal austerity of the post war era. While others produced the practical fashions necessitated by decades of rationing, Dior embraced something extravagant: haute couture, the most elegant costumes imaginable in yards of rich fabrics. The New Look represented much more than fashion. David Downton

It struck a chord with the climate of the times; it symbolised leaving war behind and embracing good times ahead, and its popularity burgeoned. Sixty years on, the V&A has curated an exhibition of more than 100 of the most beautiful dresses that characterise this golden decade: ‘The Golden Age of Couture: Paris & London 1947–1957’. Dior, Balenciaga,Givenchy, Balmain, Hartnell and Amies all feature, as well as original pieces worn by royals and screen stars and photographs by Avedon and Beaton. As the V&A’s partner hotel for the event, Claridge’s will be offering a special Couture Afternoon Tea and Couture Cocktail. Until 6 Jan; V&A, Cromwell Rd, SW7
