Museum of Andrea del Sarto’s Last Supper, Florence
The Museum of Andrea del Sarto’s Last Supper is adjacent to the Church of San Michele in San Salvi, one of Florence’s oldest parish churches. Although not included in the city’s usual tourist itineraries, the museum boasts a remarkable art collection, particularly Mannerist art.
Several works (primarily altarpieces) by 17th century Tuscan Mannerist artists are on display in the entrance hall. Next is the sculpture hall, with 16th century panels from the funerary monument in honour of St. Giovanni Gualberto.
In the following hall, the washroom, is a fresco depicting the Samaritan at the Well, attributed to Cosimo Gamberucci, while the decorations above the large pietra serena bath are attributed to Benedetto da Rovezzano.
There are also a number of pre-Mannerist works.
The Last Supper, a masterpiece by Andrea del Sarto, who completed work on the painting in just 64 days in 1520 is exhibited in the Cenacle of the museum.
Of the various works on exhibit, the Madonna and Child and St. Giovannino by Jacopo Pontorno are worthy of particular mention.
