| Springtime at Le Manoir
Explore the quintessential Spring experience by staying in one of England's best-known epicurean country manor hotels. Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons has, over the years, become a favourite retreat for local and foreign luxury travellers who wish to fulfil the necessary requirements for wining, dining and reclining in a style that is both 5 star and deeply memorable.
My husband and I not only had our wedding here, but have returned close to twenty times over the last thirteen years. During this time, however, Le Manoir has learned many things and with Raymond Blanc always at the helm, the journey to stardom didn't take long. It is a warm, luxurious and stately home with taste bud-exploding cuisine and landscaped gardens and water features that leave you yearning for a country abode in Oxfordshire.
Well, until such a time, indulge in a stay here choosing one of the glorious rooms, junior suites, deluxe suites or even the unique dovecote; pamper yourself in style in your own room with one of their top therapists who can even turn back the clock with an exclusive Art of Beauty treatment; or speed up the tan with a little St Tropez; even get wrapped up in a cocoon wrap to speed up the metabolism before indulging in the menu degustation. Stroll around the manicured gardens, soak up the smells from Raymond's enormous herb garden; look in amazement at the Japanese and Malaysian gardens and watch out for the first arrival of the swallow or swift as they make their annual return to the heart of the English countryside.
When you tear yourself away there is plenty to take in around here. Oxford is an obvious choice as it is close, it is stunning and it has many areas of interest. Walk around this 'town of gown' and visit one of the World's most famous universities. Oxford University is an academic institution quite unique to this country, founded in the 13th Century, housing famous threatres, museums, libraries, gardens, churches. Turn your head on Magdelan Bridge and enjoy the spirit of Oscar Wilde, "Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us." Amble through the college lanes and meet the ghosts of Thomas Hardy, John Fowles, William Golding, Grahame Greene and Aldous Huxley and as far back as John Lock; when you stroll under arches pay homage to some of the finest literary works in history.
The shopping in Oxford is quite good too. There are many little lanes with magpie-style antique shops and an open market. There is an antique market here each Thursday from 9am - 4pm and several quick nosh restaurants and bars. A favourite of ours is Browns at the entrance to Oxford; it has a busy, social atmosphere and is run by the local students who have mastered the art of cocktail making to a tee.
Le Manoir can organise an exceptional picnic that you can discuss with the kitchen beforehand to ensure your favourite nibbles are included. With this little wickerwork in hand you can skip off into nearby countryside and just relish the joys of Spring. Dipping in and out of some classic country pubs around Great Milton and surrounding villages or drive a little farther to an all time favourite; the Sir Charles Napier in The Chiltern Hills. A welcoming fire; a fantastic wine list, a phenomenal atmosphere and hill-top location make this gastro pub a local institution.
There is so much to do, even without a trip to London...This is about glorious Spring, and sprucing it up at one of the most hospitable and luxurious venues any countryside could possibly offer.
