5-Star X-Factors

The views and the feeling of being in a cherished, aristocratic family home

Le Sirenuse

Le Sirenuse has held pole position in Positano for decades. With a peerless position overlooking the town, the dome of Santa Maria Assunta, and the inky-blue sea, it is just a 5 minute stroll through Positano's narrow cobbled streets to the beach and the busy quayside of Marina Grande.

Back in 1953, John Steinbeck described Le Sirenuse as "An old family house converted into a first class hotel, spotless and cool." The family home has been extended into adjacent buildings over the years, but Steinbeck's description remains spot-on.  With sparkling sea views, fabulous Michelin-starred cuisine and beautiful suites, Le Sirenuse is the perfect luxury 5-star hotel to stay in, while you enjoy all the rich pickings from this staggeringly scenic coastline.

For many this iconoclastic luxury hotel, is simply and luxuriantly synonymous with Positano. It holds true everything princely about this sparkling Amalfi coastal hotspot, and its fabulous refurbishment is testament to the ongoing passion of its aristocratic owners, the Sersale family.

Steinbeck alsowrote "Positano bites deep. It's a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you are gone." Again, we know exactly what he means, which is why e return over and over again.

Passionate owners

The secret of Le Sirenuse lies in its passionate owners. It opened in 1951 when 4 Neopolitan siblings converted their summer home into the hotel. Marchesi Aldo, Paolo, Anna and Franco Sersale wanted to create a luxury hotel with the intimate, sophisticated feel of a cultured private home. We can only say that they and their children and grandchildren have succeeded, running what feels like a cherished family enterprise that includes the hotel, the Emporio Sirenuse boutique across the road and a line of fragrances and skin care.

Le Sirenuse offers cosseting comfort, exemplary 5-star service and gorgeous rooms, especially the junior suites with their breathtaking sea views over the azure sea to the archipelago of 3 little islands, known as 'Le Sirenuse', after which the hotel is named. Many suites have private terraces or a balcony, vaulted ceilings and hand-made floor tiles. The overall effect is uniquely Positano and somewhere that will make a lasting impression on every guest.

Each room features beautifully restored antiques and carefully curated art, both old and modern, with exquisite attention paid to detail from the high quality bed linens to bathroom amenities.

Michelin-starred with bars under the stars

A bellini on the terrace followed by dinner in the Michelin-starred La Sponda restaurant makes every day here feel like a celebration. Gennaro Russi's cuisine is based on Southern Italy's freshest ingredients but with a modern Mediterranean twist. In 2017, at the age of thirty, he became the youngest Michelin-starred chef on the Amalfi Coast and during January 2018 was invited back to the Ritz in Paris, to cook as its guest chef.

Franco's Bar was converted from the world's most scenic car park into a stunning al fresco bar named after Antonio Sersale's father in 2015, bringing together stunning views with specially commissioned artworks and furniture,  including a striking yellow fountain by Guiseppe Ducrot, and, of course, outstanding cocktails. There is also Aldo's Bar, the Champagne Bar and the Don't Worry Bar, and every terrace has a truly stunning view to ponder while you sip your sundowner.

The pool terrave isnt huge with space so restricted all along the Amalfi Coast, but it's one of the prettiest we know, with beautiful mosaics, huge clay pots and urns containing lemon trees and cacti, sun loungers and a ro of tables and chairs overlooking the ink blue sea,

Like many 'Sirenusers' we can't wait to return again this year, but Le Sirenuse's reputation is known world-wide, so it pays to plan ahead or visit at the start or end of the season, when we think Positano is at its best.
